Sombra Translates to Shade. AZ(LAND) in collaboration between the Department of Arts and Culture, the Parks and Recreation Department, the Office of Innovation, the Office of Heat Response and Mitigation, and the Mayor’s Office will be holding a series of community events focused on addressing Urban heat through the design and development of a Sombra or Shade structure. Heat does not affect all people equally. Underserved communities, including those in South Phoenix, are especially susceptible to extreme heat. The lack of trees, ground vegetation and shade, along with large amounts of asphalt, contribute to the heat-island impact resulting in increased temperatures. With this in mind, we are partnering with CALA to explore the past and water as a means to addressing extreme urban heat.
